Askew Named GNAC Player of the Week, Smith Named to Honor Roll

For the first time this season, senior Ray Askew has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week, which was released by the league office on Monday night. Teammate Spencer Smith (New Haven, Conn.) was selected to the weekly honor roll for the second time this season.

Askew, who has been named to the GNAC weekly honor roll four times this season, led the Falcons in a 3-0 week with 84 points and 37 rebounds. The senior scored 31 points on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Mount Ida as he became only the second player ever in Albertus men's basketball history to record over 2,000 points.

Askew also recorded his third-straight double-double with his 31-point effort, while he added 11 rebounds versus the Mustangs. On the week, he shot 53.4-percent and recorded six steals and four blocked shots. He had 30 points and 11 rebounds against Lasell on Jan. 24 and then 23 points and 15 rebounds at Emmanuel on Jan. 26.

As of Tuesday, Jan. 31, Askew has recorded 2,025 points as well as 1,088 rebounds in his career. He is 209 points shy of the Albertus men's basketball record of 2,234 set by Tim Russell '05.

Smith earns a spot on the weekly honor roll for the second time this season. He has been tagged as the GNAC's Rookie of the Week twice this season as well (Jan. 9, Jan. 16). In the Falcons' 3-0 week, Smith was 9-of-12 from the floor for 20 points and grabbed 20 boards off the bench. He also recorded six steals and one blocked shot. Against Lasell, Smith pulled down seven rebounds to go with four points, while on the road at Emmanuel, he tallied seven points and six rebounds for the Falcons.

After a dominating 110-70 win over Suffolk on Monday night in GNAC play, the Falcons are now 18-1 on the year and a perfect 13-0 in league action.
