GNAC Names Smith To Third Team, Piascik To All-Rookie And Arent With All-Sportsmanship

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - First baseman Shawn Smith (Shelton, Conn.) was named to the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) third team and freshman outfielder Troy Piascik (East Haven, Conn.) was named to the GNAC All-Rookie team as the conference announced its major awards and all-conference teams on Tuesday. Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) was named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Smith had a career year at the dish with slash lines of .386/.421/.535 with 39 hits, 24 RBI, 20 runs, one home run and 12 doubles. His batting average ranked him sixth in the GNAC.

Smith had 10 multi-hit games on the season including two four-hit games. Against New England college on April 7 in a 23-11 win, Smith went 4-for-6 at the plate with a double, an RBI and a run. Against Mount Saint Mary's (N.Y.) two days later in a 14-11 win, Smith reached base six times, going 4-for-4 with two walks, two doubles, two RBI and two runs.

In a 13-4 win over Western Connecticut State University on April 17, Smith was 3-for-5 with a season-high four RBI, two doubles and two runs. He hit his lone home run of the season in a three-RBI performance against Saint Joseph's (Me.) in an 8-1 win.

Smith was also named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll during the week of April 8-14.

Piascik had a breakout first season with the Falcons with slash lines of .413/.464/.587, 31 hits, 13 RBI, 18 runs, one homer, one triple and eight doubles.

Piascik had seven multi-hit games including a 5-for-5 performance with two runs and three doubles in the win over Saint Joseph's (Me.). He also went 4-for-7 with three runs and an RBI in the win over New England College. 

During the win over Mount Saint Mary's (N.Y.), he drove in a career-high four runs and scored two runs with a homer and a double.

Piascik was also named GNAC Rookie of the Week for the week of April 8-14 after batting .529 with four RBI, five runs, a home run and four doubles in four games. He was also named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll during the week of April 22-28. 

Piascik became the first rookie to make the GNAC All-Rookie team in program history.

Albertus baseball has now had at least one player make an All-Conference team every season since 1997.

Arent, who played in 29 games primarily at second base, had 22 hits on the season, including three hits - including two doubles - and scored two runs in a game against Lasell on March 29. Against Norwich on March 22, Arent went 2-for-4 with a home run, double, one RBI and two runs.
