HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams swapped runs in the first inning as the Falcons struck first on an RBI single by Galarza that scored King Rivera (Bridgeport, Conn.), who reached on a fielder's choice. Wesleyan answered with an RBI single from Evan Diaz in the bottom of the inning.
  • Both teams went silent offensively over the next five innings as the game remained tied, 1-1.
  • The Falcons plated three runs in the top of the seventh to take a brief 4-1 lead. Colin Telford (Branford, Conn.) walked followed by a single from Abate and an RBI single from Espada. Two batters later Galarza singled to left center to score Espada and Abate to give Albertus the three-run lead.
  • Wesleyan answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single by Troy Ashkinos. Tyler Baldwin (Cromwell, Conn.) came in relief with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and struck out Sebastian Ortiz to keep it a one-run Albertus lead.
  • After both teams failed to score a run in the eighth, the Falcons added three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth thanks to a lapse on defense by the Cardinals. With runners on second and third, a ball hit by Shawn Smith (Shelton, Conn.) was mishandled at third base which scored Espada and Abate to make it a 6-3 game. Galarza then followed with an RBI single to score Joseph Cortes (Bridgeport, Conn.), who pinch ran for Smith.
  • McIntyre came into the game with a runner on first with no outs in the ninth and struck out the side - all looking - while walking just one.
