Jabs Reaches 200 Career Strikeouts, But Softball Swept By JWU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) recorded her 200th career strikeout, but the Albertus Magnus College softball team was swept by Johnson and Wales University (R.I.), 6-1 and 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader.

Jabs becomes the fourth player in program history to reach 200 strikeouts and second player this season as Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) acheived the feat earlier this season.

Jabs pitched a complete game one, striking out six.

Mikaela Schwippert (Whippany, N.J.) had an RBI double in game one to provide the offense. 

Arent pitched game two, throwing six inning, striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams went scoreless in the first inning as Jabs struck out Mackenzie Clee, who was the first batter she faced on the day.
  • Albertus had a chance to score in the top of the second as they loaded the bases, but JWU starting pitcher, Katie Scheid got out of the jam without allowing the run.
  • The 200th strikeout for Jabs came in the bottom of the second inning, striking out Hailey Martins looking.
  • The Falcons broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third with a run. Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) and Arent both singled as Albertus had runners on first and second with an out. Schwippert then doubled to right centerfield to score Arent, putting the Falcons ahead, 1-0.
  • JWU answered with a four-run bottom of the third, scoring four runs. Amanda Madigan had an RBI single and Jessica Forneiro hit a two-run triple to highlight the inning as the Wildcats went ahead, 4-1.
  • The Wildcats added a two-run homer by Caroline Amorelli in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
  • Albertus again loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth, but another strikeout by Scheid ended the threat.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In a pitchers' duel in game two, Arent and JWU pitcher, Jillian Reed managed to keep the bats at bay.
  • The lone run of the game in the bottom of the second by the Wildcats as Chloe Brunelle hit an RBI single to score Forneiro after an error on the throw.
  • After the second inning, Arent only allowed just five base runners from the third inning on and got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the xith inning. She also struck out two batters in the bottom of the fifth.
