Carangelo Named GNAC Rookie Of The Year; Joins Jabs, Arent On Second Team

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) of the Albertus Magnus College softball team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-GNAC second team along with Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) and Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) as the major award winners and all-conference teams were announced.

Ema Signore (East Haven, Conn.) was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.

Carangelo had a breakout first year as a Falcon with a .405/.480/.618 slash line. She had 53 hits, including 14 doubles, four triples and two homers while driving in 31 runs and scoring 30. Carangelo ranked third in the GNAC in doubles, fifth in hits, fourth in total bases (81), seventh in slugging percentage and tenth in batting average. She became the second player in program history to take home the GNAC Rookie of the Year award. Gillian Fortier won the award in 2019.

Carangelo had 16 multi-hit games on the season and eight games where she drove in two or more runs and eight games where she scored two runs. In a 13-2 win over Mass.-Maritime on March 23, Carangelo went 3-for-3 with a double three RBI and a run scored. In a 10-4 win over the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on March 30, she went 2-for-3 with a triple three RBI and two runs. She also had a hit in each of the four GNAC tournament games (5-for-13),  with a double two RBI and four runs.

Jabs and Arent represented both pitching spots on the All-GNAC second team.

Arent had a career year pitching and hitting. In the circle, she threw a career-high 118.1 innings, going 13-6 on the season with six complete games, 92 strikeouts with a 2.54 ERA. She ranked third in the GNAC in wins, third in ERA, fourth in shutouts with three and fifth in strikeouts. She had a career-high 10 strikeouts in a complete game 3-1 season-opening win over Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) where she allowed just one hit. She was also named the GNAC Pitcher of the Week for her performance. She also had eight strikeouts in six innings in a win over Mitchell and had a complete game 3-0 shutout with seven strikeouts in a win over Lasell on April 4. In a 2-1 win over Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on April 13, Arent recorded her 200th career strikeout, which at the time made her the third person to accomplish the feat. She finished her career third all-time in strikeouts in program history with 231.

At the plate, Arent had a .308/.457/.427 slash line with nine doubles, 19 RBI and 32 runs. She had nine multi-hit games and six games where she scored at least twice. In a 12-1 win over Elms on April 6 she went 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs. She also went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Against Regis on April 27, she recorded her 100th career hit.

It is the third time in her career Arent has made the All-GNAC team. Last season, she was named to the first team and made the third team in 2022.

Jabs finished the season with a 10-7 record in 105 innings pitched. She led the team with a career-high 105 strikeouts along with a 2.91 ERA. Her strikeouts ranked her fourth in the GNAC during the season, while her strikeouts per game (7.00) ranked her third. She was fifth in the conference in ERA. She had eight games with six or more strikeouts., including a complete game seven inning performance against New England College where she struck out nine in a 5-1 win. She also struck out nine in a 7-0 win over Mitchell in 5.2 innings. She allowed one hit in six innings while striking out eight in a 6-0 win against Lasell.

 

 

Signore, the program's all-time leader in saves added two more to her count this season as she pitched 38.2 innings. She had a 2.72 ERA with 24 stikeouts while going 2-1 on the season.
