Softball Splits First Two Games, Defeats Washington (Md.), Fall To Dominican (Ill.)

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team opened up its season in Florida in The Spring Games, splitting its first two contests of the season. The Falcons defeated Washington College (Md.) 15-4, before falling to Dominican University (Ill.), 8-5 in the second game.

Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) went 5-for-8 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in the two games. Amelia Ovalles (Lawrence, Mass.) went 3-for-4 in the two games with three RBI and two runs.

Natalia Hernandez (Lorena, TX) drove in three runs in the first game.

Madison Wilson (Belgrade, Me.) earned her first win of the season in game one. Amelia Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in game one. Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) had eight strikeouts against Dominican in 5.2 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With one out in the top of the first, the Falcons drew three walks to load the bases. Carangelo followed with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Boulli scored Mikaela Schwippert (Whippany, N.J.) to make it a 2-0 game.
  • After a scoreless second inning the Falcons erupted for five runs in the top of the third. Carangelo started a one out rally with a single followed by an RBI double by Boulli. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, a wild pitch scored a run and Hernandez hit a two run single to make it a 5-0 game. A wild pitch then plated Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) and Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead. Washington scored two in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Lilly Wenzel.
  • Carangelo, who also started the game, struck out five in his three innings.
  • Albertus and Washington each scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, which included an RBI double by Carangelo.
  • Wilson made her first appearance, pitching two innings and striking out one.
  • The Falcons put the game away in the final two innings as they scored two runs in the top of the sixth and four more runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by an RBI double by Ovalles and an RBI single by Caitlyn Burke (Lynnfield, Mass.).
  • Ovalles came in to pitch the final two innings of scoreless relief for the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Starting pitcher Jabs struck out two batters in the top of the first as the two teams went scoreless. The Falcons got the scoring going and took a 2-0 lead after a two-run double from Ovalles to score Reilly Austin and Carangelo, who walked and singled to start the inning, respectively.
  • Jabs struck out two more batters in the top of the third to keep Dominican scoreless, but the Stars broke through in the top of the fourth. After loading the bases on two singles in a walk, a wild pitch scored the first run and two errors from the Falcons plated two more runs for the Stars as they took a 3-2 lead.
  • Dominican added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run double by Raegyn Davis and plated three more runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-2 lead.
  • The Falcons rallied for three more runs in the bottom of the seventh with one out. Hernandez and Smith both walked. Carrano then reached on an error to score Hernandez and a wild pitch followed by an RBI groundout by Schwippert scored two more runs for the final tally of the game.
