HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons scored three runs in the top of the first inning as Smith led off the game and stole second. An error by Gordon off the bat from Mikaela Schwippert (Whippany, N.J.) scored the first run of the game. Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) singled and then an RBI single from Boulli made it a 2-0 game. One more error from Gordon plated another run to make it a 3-0 game.
  • After Gordon answered with a run of its own in the first, the Falcons erupted for six more runs in the top of the second as Solow drove in two runs with a double down the line. A single from Reilly Austin (Cumberland, R.I.) drove in another run to make it a 6-1 game. Austin then stole home on a double steal and a fielder's choice from Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) and an RBI single from Smith gave Albertus a commanding 9-1 lead.
  • Gordon closed the gap with four runs in the bottom of the third that included a bases loaded hit by pitch and an RBI bases loaded single by Peyton Heitzman. Gordon added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth after a two-run double by Heitzman.
  • Gordon added another run courtesy of an Albertus error in the bottom of the fifth, but the Falcons were able to get out of the jam, leaving runners on the corner and holding onto a 9-8 lead.
