Cambridge, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College women's tennis team lost on the road to Suffolk, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols.
The Falcons (2-3, 1-1 GNAC) suffered their first league setback of the fall and their second defeat in a row overall, while the Rams (3-7, 1-1 GNAC) bounced back from a 5-4 midweek loss to regional rival Springfield.
The hosts got off to a quick start, taking all three doubles matches convincingly. At No. 1, the AMC duo of senior Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) and sophomore Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.) fell, 8-1. The Falcon tandem of freshman Cayce Andrews (Hamden, Conn.) and junior Shamain McAllister (Irvington, N.J.) dropped their match, 8-1, at No. 3.
In singles play, the Rams took every match in straight sets en route to their first conference victory of the autumn. Albertus Magnus freshman Paige Williams (Orange County, Va.) put up a fight at No. 5 before losing 6-2, 6-1.
It is a quick turnaround for the Falcons as the team returns to action on Sunday, October 2, with a non-conference road match versus York that is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
