Boston, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team fell on the road to Simmons, 3-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon inside Moore Gymnasium. With the setback, the Falcons move to 2-12 overall and 0-5 in conference play, while the Sharks improve to 8-9 on the year and 5-2 in league tilts. Simmons was victorious by a score of 25-18, 25-10 and 25-21 as the visitors battled in both the first and third games.
In the first game, Albertus Magnus erased an early deficit to tie the game at eight courtesy of a kill from freshman middle hitter Megan Gritz (Milford, Conn.). Following the kill, the Sharks broke the Falcons serve and went on a run to build a five-point lead at 16-11. Again, the guests battled back to pull within two at 18-16 thanks to an attack error by Simmons. Down the stretch, the hosts put Albertus away with the final three points of the set capped by a kill from Cailin Fredrickson.
With Frerickson at the service line in game two, Simmons raced out to an early, 7-1, edge and never looked back to take a commanding 2-0 edge. In the stanza, the Falcons had no kills and five attack errors compared to five kills for the hosts.
In the third frame, Fredrickson put the exclamation point on a strong game with a match-ending kill for Simmons.
Offensively, Gritz had a team-high six kills and accounted for seven points, while junior outside hitter Amber Cohens (Hamden, Conn.) added four of her own for the Falcons. Sophomore defensive specialist Marielis Muriel (New Haven, Conn.) dished out nine assists for AMC. On the defensive side, sophomore Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn.) registered 11 digs, while Gritz, Muriel and freshman libero Megan Warnke (Naugatuck, Conn.) all contributed six digs apiece.
As a team, the Falcons had 12 kills, three service aces and 39 digs.
Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, October 14, with a road non-conference clash versus Purchase State.
