Volleyball Handles Anna Maria In Four-Set Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College took care of Anna Maria College, 3-1 in a non-conference game on Thursday evening in The Nest.

Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) had a team-high 14 kills to go with 10 digs. Sophie Cseszko (Grapevine, TX) had nine kills, while Emma Fallon (Harwinton, Conn.) had a season-high eight kills. Naomi Batalla (New Haven, Conn.) had 10 assists and 10 kills, while Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 10 assists. Alexys Signor (North Haven, Conn.) had a team-high 12 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus jumped ahead 82 in the first set, behind two kills by Cseszko, one by Pelaez and an ace by Da'Veona Parker (New Haven, Conn.). The AMCATS battled back to tie the set at 11-11, but a 9-3 run by the Falcons made it 20-14 as Pelaez had two more kills. Albertus was not threatened the rest of the way as they took a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • In the second set, Albertus had set point at 24-22 after back-to-back kills by Fallon and Cseszko, but two consecutive errors and two aces by Gia Hall of Anna Maria gave the AMCATS the set to tie the match.
  • Albertus did not take a lead in the third set until it made it a 20-19 game after a kill from Pelaez and an ace by Camila Queiroz (West Haven, Conn.). With the set tied at 21-21, Paula Matheus (Tunja-Boyaca, Colombia) and Cseszko had back-to-back kills to make it a 23-21 game. The Falcons were able to hold off the Monks the rest of the way to take a 2-1 set in the match. Pelaez had four kills in the set, while Gordon had three.
  • The Falcons trailed 15-9 in the fourth set, but rattled off five straight points, including kills by Fallon and Cseszko made it a 15-14 set. A kill by Matheus and an ace by Alyna Ovalles (Oakdale, Conn.) gave Albertus its first lead of the set. After a brief tie, Pelaez had two kills over the next three points to put Albertus ahead for good at 21-18, eventually taking the match.

Batalla notched her first double-double with 10 assists and 10 digs, which were both career highs.

Pelaez notched her 700th career kill.
