Volleyball Rallies From One Set Deficit To Beat Dean

FRANKLIN, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College volleyball team took down Dean College, 3-1 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Wednesday evening.

Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) and Emma Fallon (Harwinton, Conn.) both led the team in kills with 10. Pelaez also had a team-high five aces and 13 digs. Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 19 assists to lead the Falcons.

The win was the 14th of the season for Albertus, the most since the 2017 team finished with 16 wins.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons scored the first three points of the first set, as Paula Matheus (Boyaca, Colombia) had a block and a kill early on. Albertus extended its lead to 10-6 behind two kills by Fallon, but the Bulldogs came back to take the lead, 13-12 after a kill from Maddy Seymour. The two teams would tie five more times, but with the set knotted at 18-18, the Bulldogs scored four straight points, including two more kills from Seymour to take a 22-18 lead. They would hold on to take the set and go up 1-0 in the match. Pelaez had four kills and four digs in the set.
  • It was all Albertus in set two, as the Falcons scored the first 10 points as Matheus had two kills while Pelaez had three aces. Matheus added two more aces as the Falcons took a 13-1 lead. Dean got no closer than five points at 19-14 the rest of the way as Albertus finished on a 6-2 run to tie the match, 1-1. Matheus finished with two kills and two aces in the set. Yarieshka Sierra (Hartford, Conn.) had two kills in the set.
  • The two teams split the first 14 points of the second set, but the Falcons rattled off a 7-2 run, fueled all by errors from Dean. The Bulldogs closed the gap to 14-12, but four straight points, including another ace by Matheus put Albertus back up 18-12. With Albertus leading 22-20, the Falcons were able to finish off Dean in the set with three straight kills as Fallon had two straight followed by one from Matheus to end it and make it a 2-1 match. 
  • Deam scored the first six points of the fourth set behind two aces from Carly Rettberg. The Falcons methodically came back and eventually took an 18-16 lead as Pelaez had two aces and a kill while Fallon had two kills. The teams tied again at 18-18, but the Falcons finished on a 7-2 run, ending on an ace from Da'Veona Parker (New Haven, Conn.)
