Women's Basketball Five-Game Winning Streak Snapped In OT Loss To SJME

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team dropped a tight 83-77 overtime game to Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Saturday afternoon in The Nest.

Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) led the way for the Falcons with 27 points to go with eight rebounds and eight assists. Elizabeth Bruno (Providence, R.I.) scored a career-high 21 points, includinf 5-for-7 from three with six rebounds. Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) added 12 points, and Diamond White (Hamden, Conn.), 10 points to go along with five rebounds and six assists.

The loss was the first in GNAC play for the Falcons as their five-game winning streak was snapped.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus blitzed to an early 10-2 lead in the first quarter, including the first eight points, as Scott opened the game with a three followed by a jumper from Murray-Leach and another three from Bruno. After the Monks scored their opening basket, Bruno grabbed a rebound off an Albertus miss and made the put back to give the Falcons the eight-point lead. The Monks rallied back to close the gap, but Albertus still led, 14-10 at the end of the first ten minutes of action.
  • In the second quarter, the Monks jumped out to a 9-0 run, including four points from Grace Ramsdell and a three from Angelica Hurley. After the Hurley three, Scott followed with a three to make it a two-point game. 
  • Once again, the Monks scored the next six points, which included four more points from Ramsdell to take a 25-17 lead and forcing an Albertus timeout with 4:45 on the clock. From there, the Falcons finished the quarter on a 17-2 run to take a 34-27 lead at the half. White started the run with a jumper and then stole the ball on the ensuing possession and found Zdru for a three to make it a 25-22 game. After a layup on the other end by the Monks, Jaelyn Mitchell scored her first two points of the game and then grabbed a rebound on the other end that led to a layup from Scott as Albertus closed the gap to 27-26. White then followed with a block on the defensive end and a three on the offensive end to give Albertus the lead back at 29-27. Zdru would make another layup and Scott would hit a three with less than 10 seconds remaining before the half.
  • Ramsdell opened the second half with a three for the Monks and Elisabeth Stapelfield followed with a layup to cut the Albertus lead to two points. The Falcons eventually pushed their lead back to eight points after a three from Bruno to make it a 44-36 game with 5:44 left.
  • With 2:46 left in the third, Scott made a layup and was fouled. She made the ensuing free throw to give the Falcons their biggest lead at 49-40 with 2:46 left. Zdru hit a three with 29 seconds left in the third to give Albertus a 52-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Monks closed their deficit to 54-52 less than three minutes into the fourth thanks to five points from Ramsdell early on. Zdru hit a three to put Albertus back up, 57-52.
  • Over two minutes went by without any scoring until a free throw by the Monks with 4:32 left. The two teams would trade the next four points before Bruno burined a three with 3:10 left to put Albertus ahead 62-55.
  • Hurley scored the final seven points of the quarter, including a three with 1:22 left to tie the game at 62-62. Albertus had a chance for a basket late, but the ball rimmed out on a shot in the final seconds, sending the game to overtime.
  • The Monks hit two free throws early in OT before another three from Bruno put Albertus back up, 65-64. The two teams swapped leads on the next three possessions and the Monks took a 68-67 lead on a jumper from Ramsdell with 3:07 left. 
  • With Albertus down four points, Bruno hit another jumper to make it a 72-70 game with 1:46 left. Hurley followed with five straight points - including another three-pointer - but Bruno hit one on the other end as the Monks led 77-73. The Monks would hit their final six free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
