Providence, R.I. – The Albertus Magnus College women's tennis team lost to Johnson & Wales, 9-0, on Monday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Rhode Island College.
The Falcons (4-5, 2-3 GNAC) dropped their second straight conference contest, while the Wildcats (9-1, 4-1 GNAC) bounced back from their first conference setback of the autumn.
In doubles play, the hosts took all three matches to take an early edge. At No. 1, senior Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) and junior Kelsea Wildman (Hamden, Conn.) fell, 8-1, as did the tandem of sophomores Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.) and Izzy Sabino (Cheshire, Conn.) at No. 2.
The Wildcats carried their strong play over into singles, taking all six matches in straight sets to earn their fourth conference win of the fall. AMC freshman Paige Williams (Orange County, Va.) put up a fight at No. 6 before falling 6-2, 6-1. The only other Falcon to win one more games in each of their sets was Wildman at No. 4.
Albertus Magnus returns to action on Saturday, October 15, with a home GNAC showdown against in-state rival St. Joseph (Conn.) that is slated to get underway at 1:00 pm. The Falcons are looking to avenge an 8-1 setback against the Bluejays in the GNAC Quarterfinals last October.
