Winthrop, Mass. – Albertus Magnus College sophomore men's soccer player Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday afternoon as announced by the league office.
For the third straight week, the Falcons saw a player receive league-wide distinction after freshman midfielder Brayan Lucero (East Haven, Conn.) was tabbed as the GNAC Rookie of the Week twice. The weekly accolade is the first of Russo's young career.
Russo posted a 0.48 goals-against average to go along with seven saves and a .875 save percentage in a perfect 2-0 week for the Falcons. In midweek, non-conference action, Russo made three saves en route to a 1-0 overtime win against Hunter. The clean sheet was the second of his season and the fourth of his career. Over the weekend, he turned aside four shots in a 2-1 GNAC road win against Lasell.
He is currently tied for conference lead in wins with four, while ranking in the top-three goals-against average (1.32), save percentage (.750) and shutouts (2).
Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, September 21, with a non-conference road contest against in-state foe Mitchell. Last fall, the Falcons topped the Mariners, 2-0, in New Haven.
