Three Players Score In Double Figures, But Women's Basketball Drops Game To Hunter

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team lost a 79-52 game to Hunter College at the Courtyard by Marriott Classic on Sunday afternoon on the campus of Wesleyan University.

Ava Johnson (North Haven, Conn.) and Adriana DeBernardo (Stratford, Conn.) each had their second straight double-double. Johnson had 12 points and 10 rebounds while DeBernardo had 11 points and 15 rebounds. Ariellys Velez (Watertown, Conn.) had 10 points and four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons scored the first five points of the game as DeBerdardo opened the game with a three followed by two free throws from Johnson. Albertus didn't allow Hunter to get on the board until the 7:03 mark of the first quarter. With the game tied at 9-9, the Falcons scored the next six points after baskets by DeBernardo, Velez and Keira Reynolds (Guilford, Conn.) made it a 15-9 game with 2:05 left in the first. The Falcons led 17-15 after the first ten minutes of the game.
  • Hunter started the second quarter with a 12-0 run and didn't allow Albertus to get on the board until the 27-19 mark after a basketb by Isabella Fiorillo (West Haven, Conn.). Hunter would continue to build its lead and take a 40-23 lead into halftime. Alexa Charles of Hunter scored 22 of her game-high 40 points in the first half.
  • Dejahlee Dogans (Bloomfield, Conn.) and Fiorillo each hit a three to open the scoring for Albertus in the third quarter as the Falcons cut their deficit to 43-29 with 8:27 left. DeBernardo, Johnson and Velez each had four points in the quarter, but Hunter led 66-41 going into the fourth.
  • Albertus did not threaten in the final quarter as Hunter held on for the win.
