Women's Basketball Loses To Coast Guard; Fiorillo Scores Career High

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team lost a 70-50 non-conference game to the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) on Thursday evening.

Isabella Fiorillo (West Haven, Conn.) led the Falcons with 16 points with three assists and two steals. Adriana DeBernardo (Stratford, Conn.) scored 14 points with a career-high six blocks. Dejahlee Dogans (Bloomfield, Conn.) scored a career-high 10 points and Ava Murphy (West Haven, Conn.) had a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Debernardo scored the opening basket for the Falcons, but the Bears went on a 13-2 run to take a nine-point lead behind four points each by Farrah Peterein and Ruby Miller. The Falcons rallied and cut the deficit to 15-13 as Fiorillo made back-to-back layups while DeBernardo hit a three to cap the run. The Bears, however, scored the final five points, the final three on a three from Olivia Wright to take a 20-13 lead after the first quarter.
  • The Bears opened up their lead to 24-13 early in the second quarter until the Falcons scored the next nine points to cut their deficit to two points. During the run, Fiorillo scored four points and DeBernardo converted a three-point play after getting fouled on a made layup. The Bears finished the half on a 12-2 run over the final 4:43 to take a 36-24 lead into halftime.
  • Albertus closed the gap to 38-32 early in the third quarter a Dogans, DeBernardo, Keira Reynolds (Guilford, Conn.) and Fiorillo each had a basket. Coast Guard brought the lead back up to 41-32 after a layup by Elliot Geer, but the Falcons once again cut the lead, this time to 41-37 that included three points and two blocks by DeBernardo. The Bears scored the final six points of the quarter, four of which came from Wright as they led 47-37 going into the final quarter.
  • The Falcons brielfly knocked the deficit down to single digits as Dogans hit two threes in the first two minutes, but over a span of 4:25, the Bears went on a 13-3 run as they shot 5-for-10 from the field during the stretch as they took a 65-46 lead with 4:12 left. Georgia Pauli scored eight points during the run. Albertus was unable to make it much closer the rest of the way.
