Fiorillo Scores 16 But Women's Basketball Drops GNAC Opener To Regis

WESTON, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team lost a 63-55 game to Regis (Mass.) in its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener on Saturday afternoon.

Isabella Fiorillo (West Haven, Conn.) led the Falcons with a team-high 16 points to go with six rebounds, Ava Johnson (North Haven, Conn.) scored 14 points with six rebounds, and Ariellys Velez (Watertown, Conn) added 12 points with five steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons jumped out to an 8-3 lead at the 4:26 mark of the first quarter including three points from Johnson, a made three-pointer by Dejahlee Dogans (Bloomfield, Conn.), and a made layup from Velez. Albertus never trailed in the first quarter, as another layup from Velez and a free-throw from Adriana DeBernardo (Stratford, Conn.) gave the Falcons an 11-7 lead heading into the second quarter. 
  • Regis took the lead for the first time in the second quarter, as a jump shot from Zoey Swanson and a three-pointer from Jordyn Striggles gave the Pride a 14-13 lead at the 6:41 mark. 
  • The two teams traded scoring throughout the quarter, tying the game twice, but a free throw by Ava Murphy (West Haven, Conn.) gave the Falcons a 26-23 lead heading into the second half. Velez scored six points in the second quarter.
  • Regis equalized the game with a three-pointer by Erika Marinelli at the 8:52 mark of the third quarter. A made jumpshot by Johnson and a three pointer from Dogans put the Falcons ahead once again at 31-26. The Falcons led by as much as eight points in the third quarter at 42-34 after two straight threes from Fiorillo. The Pride cut that lead to a four point game with made layups from Riley Whittier and Kristina Asmani. Fiorillo scored 12 points in the third quarter, including going 3-for-6 from three. 
  • DeBernardo opened the fourth quarter scoring a layup at the 9:44 mark, but Regis answered with a layup from Madi Zancan to make the game 46-42 with the Falcons leading the way. Albertus led by as much as six points in the quarter, but the Pride scored 12 consecutive points to take a 54-48 lead with 2:36 remaining. Jillian Perry hit a three to start the run for Regis and Jordyn Striggles capped the run with a jumper.
  • Albertus got back to within 54-52 after two free throws from Velez, but a three from Striggles on the ensuing possession put the Pride back ahead by five points. The Pride hit six of eight free throws over the final 1:33 to close out the game.
