HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons got the scoring going after a made layup by DeBernardo. Velez and Fiorillo would follow that up with baskets of their own to give the Falcons a 6-0 run to open the game. The Blazers managed to keep it close courtesy of Talia Uribe, but seven points from Velez gave Albertus a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Blazers tied the game at 13 to open the second quarter after Mary Turco and Sanaii Diaz found the basket. The Falcons responded with an 11-0 run behind four points from Fiorillo and a three from Velez. Gabby Wasiewicz came off the bench and scored nine for the Blazers to keep things close, but Velez scored a layup at the buzzer to put the Falcons up 31-25 at the half.
  • The Falcons increased their lead to start the second half as Dejahlee Dogans (Bloomfield, Conn.) drew a foul on Tatiana Pereira to go to the line and made both of her free throws. Both teams exchanged baskets, as Uribe and Diaz had four points apiece for Elms. DeBernardo had four points in the period also, and closed the scoring with a jump shot, to keep the Falcons in front 40-36, heading to the final stretch.
  • Ava Johnson (North Haven, Conn.) started the scoring with a pair of free throws. After Turco made a layup, the Falcons had a brief 5-0 run that was capped by a three pointer from Fiorillo. The Blazers followed that with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 47. The game would only be tied for 24 seconds as the Falcons regained the lead from another three by Fiorillo, which started a 15-0 run by Albertus. Fiorillo went off in the fourth with 16 points, going 3-for-5 from behind the arc.
