Three Players Score In Double Figures, But Women's Basketball Loses To SJC

STANDISH, Me. - Three players scored in double figures for the Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team in a 69-48 loss to Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Adriana DeBernardo (Stratford, Conn.) had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Ava Johnson (North Haven, Conn.) scored 14 points with six rebounds and Ariellys Velez (Watertown, Conn.) scored 11 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Dejahlee Dogans (Bloomfield, Conn.) and Velez hit back-to-back jumpers to start the game for Albertus as the Falcons took a 4-0 lead early in the first quarter. However, the Monks scored their first nine points all on three-pointers, including two from Logan Brown to take a 9-5 lead with 6:12 on the clock. DeBernardo scored the final four points for Albertus, and the Monks added one more three as SJC took an 18-9 lead after the first quarter.
  • DeBernardo and Velez scored baskets early in the second quarter, but the Monks extended their lead to 30-13 after back-to-back threes from Brown and Lily Bean. DeBernardo hit two threes of her own and Velez hit one in the final minute of the half, cutting the SJC lead to 35-24 heading into halftime.
  • Albertus held SJC to just one point over the first five minutes of the third quarter as the Falcons trimmed their deficit to 36-30 behind four free throws and a jumper from Johnson. After the Monks took a double-digit lead once again, a layup from Isabella Fiorillo (West Haven, Conn.) and a jumper from Johnson cut the Albertus deficit to 41-34. The Monks got another three from Brown and Johnson scored the final six points for the Falcons as SJC took a 47-38 lead heading into the fourth.
  • The Monks scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter including four points from Hayden Madore to take a 55-38 lead just over a minute in. Velez and DeBernardo scored the next four points for Albertus, but a 14-7 run midway through the quarter made it a 69-45 game, putting the contest out of reach.
