Four Players Score In Double Figures As Women's Basketball Rolls Past Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Four players scored in double figures as the Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team defeated Mitchell College, 86-71 on Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Ariellys Velez (Watertown, Conn.) led the way with 28 points to go with four rebounds and four assists and shot 13-for-22 from the field. Isabella Fiorillo (West Haven, Conn.) scored 21 points, including 5-for-9 from the field with five rebounds.

Dejahlee Dogans (Bloomfield, Conn.) tied a career-high with 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting with four rebounds and three steals. Ava Johnson (North Haven, Conn.) notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Falcons have now won five of their last six games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams split the first 12 points of the game, but the Falcons went on an 8-1 run as four different players scored for Albertus to take a 14-7 lead with 3:16 lead. The Falcons continued its balanced scoring attack in the first quarter as they took a 20-12 lead. Johnson and Velez each scored six points while Dogans and Fiorillo each had four.
  • Albertus started the second quarter on an 11-2 run as Dogans and Velez each hit a three-pointer early on. Velez added another layup and Ava Murphy (West Haven, Conn.) had a basket as the Falcons led 31-14 with 5:49 on the clock. Fiorillo scored the final nine points for the Falcons - including a three-pointer - in the last 2:01 of the half as Albertus rolled to a 47-28 lead at the break. Fiorillo finished with 12 points in the quarter, including 5-for-7 from the free-throw line.
  • Mitchell cut the Albertus lead to 49-37 with 7:18 on the clock after four points from Luisa Delgado and a three from Jamya Beddoe. Velez scored eight of the next nine points for the Falcons including a jumper with 3:03 left to go up 58-40. Albertus took its biggest lead of the quarter at 62-40 after a layup from Dogans. Velez ended the quarter with a three and the Falcons led 67-49 heading to the fourth.
  • The Albertus lead would be knocked down to 72-58 with 7:40 left, but a three from Dogans followed by a three-point play from Adriana DeBernardo (Stratford, Conn.) put the Falcons back up by 20 points. The Falcons would go on to lead by as much as 24 points and never allow Mitchell to get closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
