Big Second Half By Velez Lifts Women's Basketball To Upset Win Over Regis In GNAC Quarterfinals

WESTON, Mass. - Ariellys Velez (Watertown, Conn.) scored 30 points, including 22 in the second half as the Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team upset the third-seeded Regis College Pride in the quarterfinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament.

Velez also added six rebounds with two assists and two steals while going 10-for-10 from the free throw line.

Isabella Fiorillo (West Haven, Conn.) finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points while grabbing 12 rebounds.

Dejahlee Dogans (Bloomfield, Conn.) added nine points with four rebounds and Adriana DeBernardo (Stratford, Conn.) and Ava Johnson (North Haven, Conn.) each chipped in with eight points.

The Falcons now go on to face the second seed, Saint Joseph's College of Maine on the road on Friday at 5 p.m. It will be the fifth straight trip to the semifinals for the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In a low scoring first quarter, the Falcons took an early 8-5 lead after the first 10 minutes, led by DeBernardo, who scored four points. The Albertus defense held Regis to 1-for-18 (5.6 pct) shooting in the first quarter.
  • Johnson scored the first four points for the Falcons in the second quarter as the two teams were tied 12-12 with seven minutes on the clock. However, over the next five minutes, Regis went on a 12-5 run to take a 24-17 lead as Jordyn Striggles and Erika Marinelli each hit a three during the run. Velez scored four points in the final 1:31 of the second quarter, but the Falcons trailed, 27-22 heading into halftime.
  • The Falcons went 5-for-6 from the free throw line - including a perfect 4-for-4 from Velez - early on in the third quarter before a three from Fiorillo cut the Albertus deficit to 33-32. Nearly a minute later, a steal from Fiorillo led to a three from Velez to put the Falcons ahead 35-34. After a miss on the other end by Regis, Velez grabbed her own rebound off a miss for a put back to put Albertus up by three. A three-point play by Dogans with just over a minute left and another three from Velez put Albertus ahead 45-39 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • A three from Dogans, followed by a layup from Velez gave Albertus a 50-39 lead with 8:20 remaining in the game. The Falcons took their biggest lead of the game at 54-41 after a jumper from Fiorillo, but the Pride rallied to cut the Albertus lead down to six at 56-50 as Jillian Perry scored nine straight points for the Pride, including a three. Regis cut the lead down to 59-56 after threes from Striggles and Perry sandwiched between a layup from Velez with 1:16 left. DeBernardo added a layup and the Falcons went 4-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to hold onto the win.
