Falcons Take Both Games From Newbury 6-1, 3-2

New Haven, CT - The Albertus Magnus College Men's Baseball Program took both games from visiting Newbury College on Saturday afternoon at Quigley Stadium.  The Falcons received two complete games from their starting pitchers winning both games to improve to 2-8, 0-0 GNAC on the young season.

Game one featured a strong complete game pitching performance from junior southpaw Charles Chancio (Oxford, CT) who went seven innings giving up one earned run on three hits while striking out six.  The Falcons wasted little time as junior shortstop Kyle Calechman hit a solo homerun to start the game giving the Falcons an early 1-0 lead.  Newbury College responded in the second inning tying the game 1-1 before Albertus came to the plate in the fourth inning.  The Falcons used a three run homerun from freshman Matt Caputo (East Haven, CT) to go ahead 4-1.  Albertus would tack on two more runs for the 6-1 victory.

game two featured another strong complete game pitching performance from senior righty BJ Senna (Wallingford, CT) who went seven innings giving up two runs on six scattered singles while striking out three.  The Falcons trailed 1-0 going into the fourth inning when back to back doubles from Caputo and sophomore Rob Gambardella (North Haven, CT) tied the score 1-1.  After senior third basemen Peter Rogan (Middletown, CT) singled and stole second base, Head Coach Brian Leighton stole third base on a pitchout to the lefthanded hitting Caputo.  After and errant throw from the catcher Rogan was able to score giving the Falcons the 2-1 lead.  In the top of the seventh Newbury would tie the game 2-2 with two outs off of the starter Senna.  Coach Leighton then inserted the DH into the game allowing Senna to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning.  Senna wasted no time belting the second pitch he saw over the left field wall to walk-off with the 3-2 victory.  Albertus Magnus travels to Springfield, MA to take on Springfield College on Monday afternoon.
